We're Home!

We arrived safely home on Tuesday afternoon about 2:30 pm after the flight from Heathrow to Phoenix. Then, yesterday morning at 7:30 am I had my damaged right little finger joint surgically replaced. Hence, no time to properly finish up! Sorry! A proper ending to follow in about a week when my hand gets unwrapped and I get the use of my right hand back! So thanks for coming with us, and more later! Love to all! m xxx

We’re Being Lazy Today!

Up this morning about 7 am to another blue sky and sunshine-y day.  I had a lovely soak in the tub and we went downstairs to a lovely Hilton buffet breakfast.  We were both really exhausted last night –  R  thinks that 2+ weeks of some intensive driving, walking and sightseeing really wore us out!  In fact, he was asleep before I was, which almost never happens!  At any rate, we’ve decided to take it easy today and give the car a rest.  So, a museum in the morning, a bit of lunch in town, and then???     Out of the hotel about 10 and a fast  Uber  – and truly, these drivers appear almost instantly – either  Newcastle  isn’t very big – which I don’t think is true – or else they’re everywhere – which I suppose could be true!  But I don’t think we’ve waited more than 2 or 3 minutes yet!  Fortunately, our Hilton is very centrally located and very easy to find.  Into t...

A Day of Very Interesting Monuments – Some Older than Others!

Up this morning about 5:30 am – to find that neither of us had developed frostbite during the night!  And yes, it was definitely that cold!  The “storage heating” that supposedly would go on “during the night” of course didn’t – surprise! – so we have decided that enough already of the cold.  We will be staying here one more night, and then heading off in the morning to the big city of  Newcastle Upon Tyne , England and a Hilton on the river which hopefully has heat or at least the ability to provide something that resembles it!     We have found that in many adventures, there comes a spot that doesn’t quite live up to expectations – and this is definitely it!  The apartment itself is fine – albeit no hairdryer, so I’ve got wash and wear hair going on today, but even that is livable – providing we can be warm and comfortable – which we can’t … add that to the number of steps to the 4 th  floor, and enough is enough already...

Gotta Love Those Cairns!!

  Up this morning about 6 to a relatively clear day.  We had a tentative plan to go to the Island of  Rousay  today, but unfortunately, we hadn’t made any reservations on the ferry.  (It’s a half-hour ride, and of course these days it’s always advised to book.). When we got there, no space for us!  So, change of plans – today we would see those sites on the  Mainland  we haven’t yet seen, and we would plan the  Rousay  trip for Thursday.  On then, to our first site for the day, the  Unstan Chambered Cairn.   The entrance road was, quite literally, a farmer’s driveway, and the visitor’s parking lot was immediately in front of their garage. The mound of the Cairn itself was probably 50 feet from their back door – we were wondering what it must be like to have a truly Neolithic period tomb right on your doorstep!  As the parking area had room for all of three cars, and we were #3, we figured ther...
